Feeding the Hungry
Feeding Sarasota families at Thanksgiving and Christmas since 2006.
During the holiday season, the Juntos have been feeding the hungry in Sarasota since 2006. First working with our local missionary, and now having expanded to working with the Women’s Resource Center in Sarasota, we have worked hard to identify the deserving needy – those families, generally a single working-parent household, most often a mother or grandmother.
At Thanksgiving, we have provided and delivered both pre-boxed Thanksgiving dinners or $100 gift cards from Detweiler’s groceries (where no alcohol or tobacco products can be purchased), to 40 families that would otherwise not be able to enjoy a proper meal.
At Christmastime, each head-of-household receives $125 per family member in Detweiler’s grocery gift cards. Detweiler’s kindly discounts the cards 10% to help us serve as many individuals as possible.
We also maintain a reserve that allows us to help fulfill requests from the families during emergencies and offer $250 up to $1000 for food during layoffs, or other dire circumstances.
